| October 25, 2006 - Jamie Dryden’s account of his experience at SCCA National Runoffs
My experience at the Runoffs
was great, didn't do as well as I would have liked, but had a great time. First
of all the track was much faster than I thought it would be, but it was a lot
of fun to drive. The facilities were great. Nice rest rooms, showers,
concessions, the tech building and impound are first class, and all the people
were a joy to work with. I was in some
what of a time crunch to get ready for the Runoffs, as I had just purchased a
newer car only a couple of weeks before the runoffs, and had not much time in
the car, I was a little slow getting up to speed and the fastest time I had for
the week got DQ’d for my rear wing being 3mm to high, so for the race I had to
start in 23rd place. As the race went on things went well, I turned the fastest
time of the week for me in the race and moved up to finish in the 14th place, I
would have liked a top 10 but was happy with the results. The competition in my
class I felt was much closer than most of the other classes. In most of the classes
there was a large gap from the front runners to the back, but in FC it was very
close from front to back. I hope that
anyone that has the desire to go to the runoffs will, it is a great experience.
It’s a long week, a lot of work, very expensive, but well worth the
effort. I will miss racing with all of
you, as I'm retiring next year to live on my boat in the Jamie Dryden |
| October 19, 2006 - SCCA Runoffs (continued) Here’s my story and I’m sticking to it...
At least it till Speed broadcast (Tues. 11/14 12noon MT) or Sports Car (probably not, they don’t seem to want to give me much ink lately) make me alter it!. I already sent Mike a short report on Jamie Dryden’s Runoffs, but it would be good if he checks in as I was suiting up and going to grid during his race. You can catch Jamie/FC on Speed at 11am MT Tues. 11/14.

| October 14, 2006 - Stan Czaki finishes strong in the SCCA Runoffs
Great job for the 8th
place finish in a brand new car with very little testing time. (We won’t count
the street time in TorC). Like they say “ old age and treachery, will over come
youth and ambition!” Stan had a fast lap on the 8th lap and was good
for 4th fastest time in the race. Race was won by Don Knowles, NE
Division, Philadelphia Region driving a 2006 Pontiac Solstice, 2nd
place was Chad Gilsinger, CE Div. Ohio Valley Region in an 2006 Honda Civic Si
and in 3rd Place was the defending SSB National champion, Toby
Grahovec, CE Div., Chicago Region driving a 2003 BMW Z4…..also finishing in
4th Place was RM Div.’s Bob Boileau driving another Honda Civic Si. |

| June 15, 2006 Here's an update and summary from the RMD Regional at Sandia Motorplex
With beautiful, warm Racing on Saturday was with hot weather for the drivers
and SCCA workers. The PanAm SM racers gave everybody a run the their money
with PanAm drivers making a great showing. Craig Whalen in FP tore up the track
and had a good finish. In FC and CC, Jaime Dryden took first place in FC, while
Jose Gerardo, crashed after 3 laps and was out the race. Richard Dziak drove
hard, pushing for a second place finish until he spun the car in turn 6 hairpin
in lap15, and finished third in his class for more points towards the RMD
Regional Championship Series. A Performance Driving Clinic also took place with
about 5 cars from BMW's to Maserati's. Overall Saturday was a good day for
racing. On Sunday the pack of PanAm racers came back to track for
another day in the RMD Championship Series. Mark Kowalski from the PanAm in SM
broke out to lead the pack in car #50. Both Steve and Tim Schoeppner battled
the race out between the other racers and had a good show. After a first place
victory on Saturday in FC, Jaime Dryden was fully prepared to win another
regional for back to back wins, and Jose Gerardo was seeking his first place
victory on Sunday. Richard Dziak the current points leader thoughout the RMD in
CC Class, wanted a better finish over Saturdays event to secure more points. With the Formula drivers in the second group, Jose Gerardo
during his practice run, took a hard crash in turn 3 and had to be brought back
to the paddock with his Formula car hanging from the hook on the wrecker. With
a very dirty car, suspension parts broken, the nose tore up, Jose had his first
visit to the SCCA ambulance and emerged in good shape. He quickly accessed the
damage and began to repair the car, while his competitors prepared for the
qualifing heat. Both Jaime Dryden and Richard Dziak had good times in
qualifying and the race grid was set. Jose Gerardo worked very hard to get his
damaged car ready, and thanks to a race trailer with spare parts Jose repaired the
damage, and was placed at the end of the grid for the race. The Formula car
race was very exciting from the start to the finish. Jose Gerardo who started
last made a quick move on the green flag and passed four cars into turn one, to
quickly pursue the leader. One by one, Jose passed the all the cars and t ook
the lead. Jaime Dryden who won on Saturday, also had a crash in turn 3 on lap
18 to take a 3rd place finish, while Jose Gerardo took the checkered flag for
the won. Richard Dziak had a real race from the rear of the pack, dueling it
out against a Formula Atlantic car and Club Ford beating out
both to finish a strong 2nd in his Class for additional points in the
RMD Championship Series. The next Regional event will take place in Club Racing within the PanAm region has never been stronger
with 9 Club Racers. While 8 racers from the PanAm attended the Sandia
event, PanAm's Stan Czacki drove his new Pontiac Solstice out to The PanAm members and Board of Directors should be very
proud of the dedication that these 9 racers have for representing the
region in Club Raceing. With the season more than half over, a battle will take
place for Richard Dziak CC and Craig Whalen FP at La Junta to secure the
Regional Championship for themselves and the PanAm region.

region, contact Mike Downey Regional Executive at mikedowney1@earthlink.net . |
| May 17, 2006 Important information about this year’s Solo Nationals - from Roger (Houston) Johnson Greetings fellow Soloists It is getting closer to the 2006 Tire Rack SCCA Solo Nationals –
which starting this year will be held at Heartland Park Topeka (HPT) race track. Because
it is a new venue and because it is very different from past Solo Nationals
sites, there seems to be much speculation and many wild claims flying around
the internet and Solo events around the nation. I hope to address some of
these speculations and claims in this letter. I should probably also mention that Karen Babb and Kevin Youngers, arguably two of the nation’s best Solo course
designers, have been assigned as the Course Designers for the 2006 Solo
Nationals. All of us arrived a day prior to the 2006 SCCA National
Convention to visit the site for mapping and planning purposes. The following is taken from some excellent correspondence
recently received from Karen Babb, and I wholly agree with her observations and
comments: “I have never seen this good
of a blacktop surface anywhere. Very close to flat, very smooth. The HPT site is logistically
completely different from Forbes, "New-Salina", or
"Old-Salina" in that the courses will in essence be side-by side with
a "buffer zone" between them, making it somewhat conceptually akin to
a typical Pro Solo layout, but rather larger. Yes, the overall square
footage available to each course is not what it was at Forbes, particularly in
comparison to Forbes-North. However, it must be remembered that only a
fraction of the Forbes area was actually usable. Typically layouts had to
tiptoe among the land mines, trying to use the best (or least bad) of the
available surface. Routes were constrained, as were in most cases widths
and directions. The actual usable square footage was probably less than
25% of the total area at the North end. The need for overlap and
separation had to be dealt with as the surface allowed. At HPT there are no such
issues. No grates, poles, peaks, valleys, holes, frost
heaves, snakes, etc. So the course can be routed wherever it needs
to as the desired elements and separation requirements dictate, not as the
surface dictates. This offers considerable freedom in what elements can be
used, how they can be connected, and how they can be oriented, even within the
constraints of needing the Start and Finish on a particular end of the
available area. This type of openness makes possible the use of a variety
of space-saving methods that can if necessary compensate for a somewhat smaller
overall area. The route length on my 2003
South course was approximately 3650 feet; available route lengths in
preliminary sketches on the left side of the HPT pad have yielded lengths of
3500-4000 feet. It’s largely a matter of being able to make the best use
of the available space. Many details (e.g. Grid locations and
ingress/egress points) have yet to be finalized, but it looks pretty good at
this point. It should be remembered that
a very big complaint year after year from members at the Town Meeting was about
the deteriorating Forbes surface. The move to HPT was largely driven by
this input. It seems counter-productive for members to assume the worst
about getting something they asked for, even before they see the actual
hands-on results of the change. At this point I'd just ask
that people stay tuned and have a little faith in the event Chairman, the
course designers, the Nationals event officials team,
and the National Staff to provide a Solo Nationals that won't beat their car to
death, and will offer improvements they can all appreciate. Yes, it will
be different. No, it won't be perfect. Yes, it will
evolve. That's all fine with me.” – Karen Babb I would like to add to her comments that holding the Solo Nationals
at a purpose built race facility, instead of a location designed and meant for
other uses, really makes a positive impression. Everything at the site is
about racing and competition. This means that HPT has erected buildings
designed solely to function for the needs of automotive competition. For
example, the scales are permanently mounted and located inside tech/impound
building – out of the weather. There are real toilets (flushies!),
a paddock wide public address system, garages for rent, a registration
building/parking lot that is on the way in. There is also a beautiful
track that surrounds the paddock and Solo course area. Who knows – there
may even be cars running the track while we are there! All of this adds
greatly to the overall competitive feeling and gives credibility to what we
do. It only seems fitting that the Solo Nationals be held in a purpose
built race facility instead of a parking lot – a place where the Nation’s best
will compete for a chance to earn their 2006 Solo National Championships. If I may steal a line from Karen’s correspondence above, I think
it is worth repeating: “Yes, it will be different. No, it won't be
perfect. Yes, it will evolve. That's all fine with me” See you at the 2006 Solo Nationals Roger H. Johnson ( Solo Nationals Event Chairperson |
| March 11, 2006 GEARING UP TO WIN by Luis Moreno Have you ever wanted to find a way to utilize all the horsepower and
torque from your engine and get it to the ground? Well, there is a
way to achieve that! You have to "Gear Up To
Win"!
First, you need to determine at what
given RPM you want to reach and maintain in
order to extract the maximum horsepower and torque from
your engine. Please refer to the Factory
Service Manual (of your particular automobile) to
find that value and then you can proceed to explore the
different factors that will enhance that given value.
Second, you need to make sure that any changes or modifications that
you're going to attempt or try will be within the
guidelines and regulations
of the class that you are competing in. Let's get started.
Let's say that you're competing in a stock class and you want to
increase your acceleration and help you car pull
harder out of slow speed corners. I will use my CRX
as an example (at one time I did run the car in its stock form in
A Stock - against Porsche 911s,
Lotus Elans, some pretty heady machinery to say the
least):
I carefully went through every last detail in the SCCA
Rulebook to see what I could do legally in Stock
Class to help the little CRX pull out
of the corners harder. The rulebook simply stated that we had
to retain the original factory wheel diameter and
width (and plus or minus one quarter of an inch
concerning the backspace of the wheel). Hmmm...
that seems easy enough! Next, I searched out what aftermarket
wheels were available that met that criteria - I was primarily interested
in weight savings. Lighter unsprung
weight is also a key element in achieving quicker
acceleration. I found an aftermarket racing wheel (a
Panasport "Ultra-Lite" single-piece
wheel) that would save me 2-1/2 pounds
of weight at each corner! This may not sound like much, but it is
really a huge savings in unsprung weight. I
even located some forged aluminum racing lug nuts to shave even more
weight off each corner - to the tune of 2-
pounds more in total. Now I had just taken off
3 pounds (with wheels and lug nuts) off each
corner! Now, I needed to find a tire to complement my new racing
wheels and lug nuts. I searched high and
low at the time (mid-eighties) to find the perfect
tires.
After an extensive search there was but one tire that would do... the
Yokohama A-001R. The original factory size on the
CRX was a P175/70R-13 (which has a 21.6"
diameter, with a 6.3" tread width). The
size that I decided upon was a P185/60R-13 (which has a
20.6" diameter and a 6.5" tread
width). I now had a tire that not only had better grip,
but that would also greatly increase my acceleration.
I had discovered in my Factory Service Manual that my 1.5 liter
fuel-injected motor made 91 horsepower at
6,200 RPM and the 91 foot pounds of
torque came in around 5,500 RPM. These
stats meant that I needed a tire that would keep the engine reving fairly
high between the 6,000 to 7,000 RPM
range in order for the CRX to be quick enough to take on the Elans and
Porsches!
Through various R & D tests, I found that with
the P175/70R-13 tires my
Zero-to-Sixty MPH times were averaging between
8.6 to 8.8 seconds. When I mounted
just the racing wheels and lug
nuts to the same P175/70R-13 tires, my
Zero-to-Sixty MPH average times dropped between
8.4 to 8.6 seconds! A slight improvement,
but one that would translate to a total savings of
half-a-second on a sixty-second autocross
course... Figures Don't Lie! We tested it
over and over again.
Remember using lighter unsprung weight is almost
like installing a "lighter" or a
"lighten" flywheel in your car. There is much less
inertia to overcome in braking and acceleration utilizing
less unsprung weight.
We then mounted the P185/60R-13, A001-R's on the
racing wheels and using the racing aluminum lug
nuts as well, and went to go test again.
Zero-to-Sixty times dropped between 7.5 to 7.7
seconds averaged over eight acceleration runs. An
improvement of nine-tenths of a
second! We went back to the autocross course.
What we found on the autocross course was a "Two-Fold"
advantage! We not only gained Absolute Cornering
Speed, but along with it came vastly
improved "Slow-Speed" Corner Acceleration
like we had never experienced before. Simply stated, we
were faster going into the corners and even
quicker coming out of them. The
average total time gained on the same sixty-second autocross
course was 2.5 to 2.7 seconds! Much more time
savings than we had anticipated!
So you can see that by a careful examination of the
rulebook, in-depth research of tires and
wheels, you can have an Unfair
Advantage over the competition.

January 1, 2006
Pan Am's grand dame passed away last Friday morning from brain cancer. Maxine Porter was a very energetic lady that enthusiastically supported SCCA and particularly the Pan American Region for many years. In the last few years she was the Historian of the club after many stints as RE, Assistant RE, Secretary, and Foglamp editor. The SCCA and us in Pan Am are all enjoying the benifits of Maxine's hard work and dedication. God's speed Maxine. |
