2003 PAR Spotlight #12 - Mike Downey

Mike Downey - 2003 PAR Treasurer

2003 PAR Solo 2 HS Champion

2002 PAR Solo 2 HS 2nd Place

Occupation:  Manager; Visteon Fuel Systems
Born in Elwood, Indiana
Pit Crew - Wife Becky

1. How long have you been a member of SCCA?

I have been an SCCA member for only 3 years.  I was looking for some 'motor-heads" that have a common interest as mine. Also I was looking for some information about road racing in this area as I was helping a friend of mine with an ex-Bonneville Record holder/Vintage Racer restoration project.

2. What was your first car?

My first car was a 1951 Chevy – of course only a 6…no V-8's in Chevy's line up until '55…reminder.  This was in 1961 so it was not a classic just an old car…My Dad thought I was nuts when I paid $300 for it…. In a few months I installed a slit and blocked exhaust manifold and a cool sounding set of dual exhausts…then commenced to dispense of every 1949-1950 flat head V-8 Ford I could find!

3. What was/is your favorite car?

If I have to choose only one, I guess my all time favorite car is of course the Corvette, but as far a model of Corvette it would have to be a 1957 Fuelie, Still love the older model straight axle cars.  I have owned two Corvettes' in my life a 1965 Coupe, which I had started to restore, but sold to obtain my first of two Auburn's. Currently Becky and I own a Yellow 1993 Corvette Roadster and no Auburn's.

4. What is your favorite racing memory?

I have been an avid spectator/armchair racer…attending approx. 30 Indy 500's and countless practice days and Qualification days…growing up only 60 miles from Indy afforded me an opportunity to attend easily; sometimes at the expense of “sick days" during high school. Probably attending the early days of Trans-Am and CAN-AM races at Mid Ohio and the road races at Meadowdale outside of Chicago.  One memorable one was watching Jim Hall and Roger Penske drive the Chaparrals to a 1-2 side-by-side finish after the King Cobras blew up at Meadowdale in 1964-65 not sure exactly what year.

5. Who is the racer you admire or respect the most?

Really a tough question here, as I have favorites in all phases of motorsports. I guess the first and still my favorite has to be Roger Penske; his racing ability was limited, but his mastering of every phase of Motorsports as a business plan still amazes me. Mark Donahue as the real first engineer to win in most areas he participated in, of course with Penske equipment. The entire Unser Family; a total of 9 Indy 500's victories, Pikes Peak etc, (if they could only handle snowmobiles and four runners).  Rick Mears for 4 Indy wins in only 15 starts. Jeff Gordon for driving sprint cars on dirt to NASCAR Championships before he was 30 years old.  Jimmy Clark, Jackie Stewart, and now Michael Schumacher…amazing F1 ability!  Don Garlits for pioneering drag racing and raising it to a professional level. Parnelli Jones for mastering Indy cars, Baja Off-Road racing, Trans-Am, Daytona, and LeMans. A.J. Foyt for mastering every form of racing machine, firing his own father as chief wrench, elevating the fine art of cheating to a new high (hiding a nitrous bottle in his driving suit). I cannot leave out Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, and James Garner for their ability to drive and win in amateur races and for their making the best auto chase and racing movies ever. I could go on-and-on from here so I will stop.

6. How do you rank the following (driver, car, car preparation)?

Well as I mentioned in the last question when naming my favorite drivers there is a common thread running through all those names. Equipment and car preparation are of great importance, without it the consistency will not be there no matter how good are the drivers' skills. Example Al Unser Sr. is as accomplished a driver as there is in the sport, but he suffered in his later years through poor equipment and only won his 4th Indy when he piloted a Penske car.  On the flip side you have drivers with great ability when driving well-prepped cars also Juan Montoya in Ganassi cars and now in F1 with Williams. Not saying Williams is ill prepared, but sure no match for Ferrari, and who is?  Was Schumacher a giant star before Ferrari picked him up?  Answer is that to be great you must have all the ingredients, driver, car and preparation…..big bucks sure help!

7. What makes you successful?

What measures success…money, power, living life?  I have had the most success, because of having a wife and family that loves me for whatever I am or want to do.  I am competitive by nature; this keeps me going.  It was once said that "winning is not the only thing, it is everything". (Vince Lombardi)

But wining at all costs may not be worth the effort, so I just enjoy where I am and remain satisfied to compete either in business or fun.  The joy I find in Solo racing is fantastic; it is somewhat inexpensive, lets the competitive juices get churned and you meet some great people in the process.  I started this pretty late in life but I still want to whip the "flat bellies" every time I come out.  My success rate here is about 30/70, so I have some work to do … or maybe I’ll just change classes again!

2003 PAR Spotlight #11 - Steve R. Carvajal

Steve R. Carvajal - PAR 2000 Driver of the Year

2001-2003 Road Racing competitor in

SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge and

NASCAR's Southwest Tour

2000 Pan American Region Assistant RE

1999 PAR Solo 2 Champion

Occupation:  Manager of Brown & Brown, El Paso
Born in El Paso Texas
Favorite food - Big Juicy Rib Eye Steak

Pit Crew - Nick Jennings, crew chief, Bobby Barnes, Evan Thompson, Jimmie Davis, John Carlson, Randy Mendez, Crew

  1. How long have you been a member of SCCA?

    Six Years

  2. What was your first car?

First car was a 1962 VW Bug, First race car was a 1974 Bob Sharp 260 Z, C Production car

  3. What was/is your favorite car?

Currently? Hmmm, favorite roadrace car would have to be either my current roadrace chassis for the SW Tour, or perhaps my World Challenge Mustang, maybe the ASC car pictured above!  (It is the only car I've won on pavement with.)

  4. What is your favorite racing memory?

Racing with Eliot Forbes Robinson, back and forth, at Texas Motor Speedway in World Challenge, Sept. 01, or maybe my first win, Willow Springs Raceway, Feb. 03.

  5. Who is the racer you admire or respect the most?

That's a REALLY HARD question.  Jeff Gordon would have to be in the running, genuine nice guy, fast as stink in anything, also, EFR, Irv Hoerr, Tony Stewart, Ken Stinnett, Greg Biffle, (well maybe not...),  If I had to pick JUST one, I would have to go with Kenny Schrader, Greeat Guy, likes beer, lives to race, anything, and spends most of his time in a racecar, often just for fun.

  6. How do you rank the following (driver, car, car preparation)?

On a road course, driver and car can make up for some of the set up problems, but on an oval, you can have the best driver in the world and he'll lose to a decent driver with a better set up.

  7. What makes you successful?

Seat time, practice, practice practice, listening to those who are better than me.  Even at my age, (middle age),  I continue to mature as a driver.  I've learned that I'm not nearly as good as I once thought I was.  I get in anything I can to race, roadrace, ovals, dirt, offroad, anything for seat time and experience.  I recently started racing locally at Southern New Mexico Speedway, (3/8 dirt oval), and El Paso Speedway Park, (1/2 mile dirt oval), because it is a real blast to race on dirt.   It's great for seat time, and I don't have to travel out of town.  Overall, however, the two things that have made me a much better/faster racer are getting coaching from Chris Cook, (www.Shiftintogear.com), and just racing more and more and more.

2003 PAR Spotlight #9 - Jeff Kelley

Jeff Kelley

2003 Pan American Region Club Racing Chairman

2002 Solo 2 FS Champion

2

Born in Washington, PA, moved to New Mexico in 1978 and acquired a taste for Mexican food.  Recently moved to Los Alamos and work at the Lab as a Budget Analyst (bean counter).  Bought a house that has a garage this time so I don't have to work in the dirt anymore.  My crew chief and wife Veronica and I are excited about living up here since we're half way between El Paso and Denver- good location to travel to Solo and Road Race events.  I will remain a Pan Am member and try to keep my points up in ESP with the Cobra.

1. How long have you been a member of SCCA?

Since 1991

2. What was your first car?

A 1967 VW Baja Bug my dad and I worked on.  Funniest thing you ever saw.  Had the swing axles adjusted down for ground clearance, was "Parrot" (lime) green and a chrome "Stinger" exhaust.  Also had a 1700cc VW Bus engine with a big Carter carb.  Lots of torque and it would just go.  Very hard to learn the clutch on that thing.

3.  What was/is your favorite car?

All the cars I've had were my favorite for one reason or another.  The Fiat Spiders for the convertibles, the Javelin because it reminded me of the old Trans Am cars from the 70's, the Alfa for the looks and handling, the Saab turbo as the road trip car and the Mustang Cobra for the motor (definitely not the handling).

4. What is your favorite racing memory?

My first event back in 1990 with the Rio Grande region at a UNM parking lot. I still vividly remember the nervousness and adrenaline rush.

5. Who is the racer you admire or respect the most?

Pretty much any WRC driver.  Now that takes talent.  Especially Marcus Gronholm- coming from 2 minutes behind to win the Rally of Argentina.

6. How do you rank the following (driver, car, car preparation)?

1- Driver.  I've seen guys in 30 year old broke down rat traps consistently win their class against brand new high dollar machines.
2- Car. Need a good foundation to race with.
3- Prep.  Once you have a driver with ability and the right car, the preparation is icing on the cake.

7. What makes you successful?

I wouldn't say I'm really successful, but determination helps.

2003 PAR Spotlight #7 - Al Melton

Al Melton

2002 - Solo 2 A-Stock Champion
2001 Pan American Region Assistant RE

Occupation:  US Army retired (1960).  I was born in 1921 and am currently 82 years old.  I came to (Fort Bliss) El Paso in 1958 with the Army.  I am still involved in local SCCA and PCA club events such as Autocross, time trials and SCCA Regional Club Races at Arroyo Seco.  I may consider a stop to my participation when I hear that American John Fitch age 85 and Paul Newman age 79 stop racing.  My favorite bumper stickers are “SO MANY PYLONS SO LITTLE TIME” and “IF YOU LIFT – YOU LOOSE.”  My favorite racing slogan is:  “IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE YOUR CAR UNDER CONTROL AT SPEED YOU ARE DRIVING TOO SLOW.”

  1. How long have you been a member of SCCA?

I joined SCCA in 1962 via Noel Armstrong.  Noel was a BMW – Alpha Romeo dealer / Lotus racer, but I first got the sports car / racing bug while stationed with the army in Italy watching the annual “Mille Miglia” and F1 race at Monza, Italy.

  2. What was your first car?

I had my first car at age 18; it was a Model A Ford Coupe for which I paid $30.00 for while I was a senior in high school.  The rumble seat in the car could hold 2 people and had a sign on the back bumper saying “GIRLS WHO SMOKE PUT YOUR BUTTS IN HERE.”

I bought my first sports car from Noel Armstrong (Alfa Romeo / BMW dealer) in 1962.  An Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce with a DOHC 1300 cc engine.  SCCA over classed it into G-Stock with 1600 cc Porsche 356As and Speedsters and Triumph TR4s etc, so it was not competitive in Autocross.  So, since I couldn’t beat them…I joined them in 1991 with a 1968 911-L Porsche, and then in 1972 I bought my current pride and joy, a 1972 911-T 2.4L with mechanical fuel injection – an excellent auto-crosser, time trials and drivers education car.  The 911 and I have won 5 annual Pan American Region SCCA A stock awards and several PCA driving event awards against other like classed Porsches.

  1. What was/is your favorite car?

My all time favorite sport – racing car is the 1955 Mercedes Benz 300 SLR “Gull-wing”.

I took factory delivery of a 1957 Mercedes Benz 220 S 4 door sedan in January 1957 and drove through 700 miles of snow and Ice to the water port of Geneva, Italy for shipment to the USA.

  1. What is your favorite racing memory?

American WWII Air Force pilot and test driver for the 1st American Corvette Jon Fitch drove the 300 SLR to many victories and the GT Championship.  I road in his 1955 Mille Miglia winning 300 SLR in 1956 with 7 time German Champion and Mercedes Factory Driver Rudolf Carachiola who proceeded to scare me to death at 160 mph.

My personal greatest victory cam in an annual PCA Porsche parade in Steamboat Springs Colorado in 1978 when I took a 6th place trophy in Autocross against 19 others in the same PCA class.  I had the only trophy in my class on street tires.  At age 77 I was the oldest by 12 years to win a PCA speed event.

  2. Who is the racer you admire or respect the most?

    Mario Andretti

  1. Who is the racer you admire or respect the most?

Jim Clark (He never bragged or verbally intimidated the competition...he did it on the track.) A very quite spoken man.

  1. How do you rank the following (driver, car, car preparation)?

1. Driver is the most important element in racing. Mental Preparation is of the utmost importance.

2. Car is next. It must have a great power-to-weight ratio.

3. Car Preparation is last. If you going to extract the optimum performance of what you’re driving the following things must be done:

Custom-built or designed shocks...a definite must!

Lightest Tire and Wheel Combination possible. (Grippyest tire if legal for your respective class.)

Driver Seat must be firm enough to hold you...if not make it up with custom seat belt harness.

Wheel Alignment...a definite must!

Pads / Shoes if legal for your class.

  1. What makes you successful?

I don't see myself as being successful, just a good observer and listener. Try to talk to some top drivers and ask them for any tips/advice. Run as many events as possible in or out of town...Practice, Practice, Practice.

HAPPY RACING

2003 PAR Spotlight #4 - Bill Walker

Bill Walker -- PAR Solo 2 Champion

2002 5th Place --  Solo 2 PAX Championship

2002 Solo 2 FP Champion

2001 Overall Solo 2 PAX Champion

2001 PAR Leadfoot award winner

2001 Solo 2 FP Champion

Occupation – Retired Army (1953-76)  Before joining the army in 1953, I was a farm boy from Missouri. After working on a dairy farm from before dawn to well after dark, army basic training was a snap.  I retired from the army in 1976 and went to work for Northrop corp. as a tech rep and got to travel to all the garden spots of the world.  I took my second retirement and started Porsche Club and NASA racing in 1993 and have been pursuing that ever since.

Born: Illinois but raised in St. Louis, Missouri

Family: married to Fran for 50 years; 2 children and 4 grandchildren.

Favorite food: anything cholcolate.

1. How long have you been a member of SCCA?

I have been a Pan Am and SCCA member since early 1996.

2. What was your first car?

My first car was a 1935 Chevy with suicide doors and no windows. My first sports car was a 1956 Triumph TR-3 that I drove in Bavaria Germany for about three years.

3. What was/is your favorite car?

To pick a favorite sports car isn’t easy; the Triumph on the back roads of Bavaria in the early sixties was lots of fun. The highly modified 57 Corvette I had for 6 years in the USA and in Germany got lots of attention and was fun to light up the tires for the local K-Town citizens. I sold the Vette in Germany and got my first Porsche 911, which was a blast to drive to work on the autobahn cruising at 125 mph. Since then I have owned 7 other Porsches. Now I would have to say my favorite is my 911 racecar.

4. What is your favorite racing memory?

My favorite racing memory is similar to my favorite car, there are several to think of, passing a 917 Porsche racecar at Laguna Seca is one, and receiving the hard charger award at a Porsche club race at Second Creek stands out also.

5. Who is the racer you admire or respect the most?

The people in motorsports I admire most are the seasoned competitor/ team owner Paul Newman and in drag racing, the legendary John Force.

6. How do you rank the following (driver, car, car preparation)?

In autocross and especially in road racing the car preparation and engine horsepower are important but I feel driver’s seat time or experience is vital to good performance.

7. What makes you successful?

What success I have had in road racing I feel is due to seat time and maturity as old age and treachery beats youth and enthusiasm every time.
